My Master Audit Library: Vetted Tools for Sustainable Living
I have spent 15+ years in the CPG industry analyzing supply chains and product safety. I don’t believe in “perfect” sustainability-I believe in making data-driven decisions that reduce harm. These are the specific tools, databases, and apps I rely on daily to vet my own home and advise my clients.
1. The “Safety First” Toolbox
These are the databases I use to cross-reference ingredient labels and chemical profiles.
- EWG (Environmental Working Group): My primary defense against greenwashing. I use the Skin Deep database to cross-reference every ingredient label. If it isn’t in their database or hits a “red” hazard rating, it doesn’t make it into my shopping cart.
- Think Dirty: I use this app as my “on-the-go” scanner. While EWG is my deep-dive research tool, Think Dirty is my go-to when I’m standing in a retail aisle and need a quick, color-coded health rating for personal care or household products. It’s excellent for identifying potential carcinogens or endocrine disruptors in seconds.
- Earth911: Recycling is often a guessing game. When I have “impossible” items like old electronics, batteries, or specific plastics, I use this to find the nearest facility that handles them correctly. It is the gold standard for avoiding landfill waste.
2. Impact & Reduction Tools
Low-tox living isn’t just about what you buy; managing less and being more efficient with your spending.
- Too Good To Go: Food waste is one of the biggest environmental drains in the average household. I use this to rescue surplus food from local bakeries and restaurants. It’s an immediate, high-impact way to reduce your personal food waste footprint.
- Commons: The most user-friendly carbon tracker I’ve worked with. It links to your spending to show you exactly where your dollars drive the most carbon. It removes the guesswork from calculating your footprint.
3. My Personal Audit Playbook
I have curated specific guides that take the research off your plate.
- My Essential Eco-App Guide: This is my consolidated list of the top apps I keep on my home screen. It’s the best starting point for anyone looking to digitize their sustainability journey.
